Donna the Buffalo represents one of the most respected brands in the world of touring roots acts. For 21 years DTB has performed feel good, infectious music that often moves listeners physically and spiritually. In the words of a longtime fan, “Their songs are well known to contain lyrics offering poetry and sage commentary on the attractions and struggles with love and politics in this life. Their magnetic musical mix has often been described as dance music and for sure there is everything from foot tapping to get up and feel ecstatic moving in their sound, but there is also some deeply satisfying solace in what DTB has to say and how they say it. The dynamic songwriting tandem of Jeb Puryear and Tara Nevins have penned over 140 songs in their collaboration with DTB.”

Their fervent fan base, self named The Herd, follows the band with zeal and has created a unique and supportive community online and at DTB shows across the nation. As an extension of this community and the band’s own dedication to live roots music, Donna started, and are still the driving force behind, the Finger Lakes Grass Roots Festival of Music and Dance in Trumansburg, NY. 2010 marks the festivals 20th year. Stemming from it’s success, a second Grass Roots Festival was started in Silk Hope North Carolina in 2002, the now bi-annual Shakori Hills Grass Roots Festival.

Over the years Donna the Buffalo has had the opportunity to collaborate and/or record with musicians such as Jim Lauderdale, Preston and Keith Frank, Bela Fleck, Mamadou Diabate, Claire Lynch, David Hidalgo, The Duhks, Amy Helm, just to name a few. This past year, Nevins also toured with former Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann’s band BK3.

The band’s 2008 release SILVERLINED, on Sugar Hill Records, rose to #8 on the Americana Music Chart. With a twentyone year tenure to celebrate, hundreds of gigs ahead of them, and an ever-evolving grass-roots sound; it looks like Donna the Buffalo is riding a cloud that is truly SILVERLINED.

At the end of the day, it’s hard to find a genre to apply to a band of music degrees
shamelessly enamored with catchy hooks, who sing through a giant megaphone in French,
shred Van Halen on electrified Irish bagpipes, write 80′s tribute dance-rock anthems in 5/4,
and re-sample themselves doing it live — all to create a modern-day musical Frankenstein that will pull even the most self-conscious listener on to the dance floor.

Formerly named My Dear Disco, the band is continuing a musical metamorphosis that
ultimately resulted in its new name. Ella Riot symbolizes not only the “Dancethink” sensibility
cultivated with their fans over the past three years, but also the full-out explosion of
expression, sound and movement their live shows are widely known to generate.

Since the bandʼs inception in 2007, they have performed over 250 live shows, including
national festivals such as Lollapalooza, SXSW, Wakarusa,CMJ, Summer Camp and Floyd
Fest and college campuses across the country. They have been recently featured in
Seventeen and VenusZine magazines; Fox Network’s “Fearless Music;” Superstation WGNTV;
were named the BMIʼs Artist of the Month; and have shared the stage with Neon Trees
and OK GO! among others.

Their latest release “Love Child” is scheduled for spring 2011, along with a new live-action
video and a tour schedule that remains as busy as ever.

Surrounding Zindle’s earthy-sweet voice is the whirlwind of guitarist T.J. Zindle and dynamic bassist Brian Crist, spinning over the world-beat grooves of drummer Loren Kranz and percussionist Randall Moore. Zindle skillfully switches between violin, mandolin, banjo, accordion, and percussion, all while dancing around the stage, drawing the awe of audiences across the country.

The Ragbirds albums have received local and national praise, hailed “Highly impressive!” by USA Today and touted as “Astounding international eclecticism” by Reveal Arts.  The Ragbirds were formed in 2005 with the release of “Yes Nearby.”  2007′s world-travel themed “Wanderlove” was Homegrown Music Network’s #1 selling album in the fall of 2008. The 2009 international release of “Finally Almost Ready” saw the band invade Japan with the single “Book of Matches” reaching #1 on the charts in Osaka. In 2010 The Ragbirds reached yet another milestone in their young careers when they independently marketed and sold their 10,000th album.

The Ragbirds have performed in over 30 states to a tune of 150+ shows a year. Crisscrossing the nation in their converted diesel bus that runs on recycled waste vegetable oil, these festival favorites have performed at Rothbury, 10,000 Lakes, Summer Camp, Ann Arbor Folk Festival, Hookahville, and more, and have shared the stage with Rusted Root, Railroad Earth, Toubab Krewe, Hot Buttered Rum, The Duhks, and many others.

More About Grasshoppah

“Oh young Grasshoppah you must concentrate and practice for the discipline to achieve string picking enlightenment.” Although they do not practice the ancient art of Kung-Fu (yet), Grasshoppah does use some of the same techniques. Their success stems from their high level of musicianship and vocal ability to the undeniable, one-of-a-kind physical srtucture of the group. From just hearing their unique eclectic sound, it is hard to envision a trio. Acoustic guitarist and lead vocalist Glenn House has perfected the ability to play drums with his feet using a series of pedals and contraptions, while simultaneously playing guitar and adding improvised harmonica solos, which requires somewhat of a meditative level of concentration. Brian Oberlin enlightens the higher octave of their sound with his ecstatic mandolin solos and rhythmic chug, in addition to lead/tenor vocals. Never to settle for a mediocre show Brian uses highly progressive effects on the mandolin creating new atmospheres. Shane Bullis provides the lower frequencies by playing electric and stand up bass adding insightful solos and a solid lead/baritone vocal creating incredible three part harmonies. Shane also throws in an occasional freestyle rhyme, putting the hip-hop in Grasshoppah. THeir large repertoire of folk-rock, traditional jass, swing, and foot stompin’ bluegrass. They also have what they call “novelty tunes,” which are innovative bluegrass versions of existing rock and roll. All of these characteristics ensure an impressive performance to the young student as well as their master.

Starting in 2001, Grasshoppah has steadily increased their schedule of live shows, including all of Michigan and the midwest, Colorado, even frequesntly touring Alaska almost every six months.

In 2002 Grasshoppah put out their first studio album titled Oh So Young. Later that year, to no one’s surprise, they walked away with the coveted 2002 Folk Album of the Year and well as the 2002 Album of the Year for the annual Jammie Awards sponsored by radio station 88.1 FM WYCE in Grand Rapids, MI. Their consistent performances have also earned them a growing reputation of a great band to see.

Grasshoppah’s original material consists of diverse influences from folk, rock, funk, blues, island, and bluegrass, sometimes staying in a certain style for a song, sometimes changing styles within the composition. This mixture of catchy lyrics and intense instrumental jams lends to remembrance. Grasshoppah’s main musical influences would be Bluegrass with an injection of pure Funk mingled with classic traditionalism. Throw in a bit of Reggae, Folk, and Blues and you’ve got it. The set lists never fail to diversify even if some of their songs have roots so deep the original artist isn’t known. Musicians that especially lie heavily on the brains of Grasshoppah might include Jethro Burns, Jerry Garcia, Stevie Wonder, John Hartford, David Grisman and even David Lee Roth!

While Grasshoppah has been the headliner many times they also have been honored to share the stage with some great musicians. In July of 2004 they got the opportunity to back up one of the bluegrass worlds most famous fiddle players, Vassar Clements, in an improv grass jam. This took place to an attentive crowd at Bliss Fest in northern Michigan. Some other homors include, Leftover Salmon, Donna the Buffulo, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Mammals, Meri Saunders, The Duhks, John Cowan Band, The Brave Combo, Ekoostic Hookah, Tim O’Brien, and Norman Blake. Ever changing and always entertaining, witnessing what they do is a great way to truly know what is Grasshoppah.

He has shared bills with artists such as Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Ani Difranco, Wilco, Bela Fleck, MMW, Del McCoury, NIN, Big Brother & the Holding Company, the Drovers, Leftover Salmon, Merl Saunders, Justin Townes Earle, Drop Q (Kris Meyers of Umphrey’s McGee, Kalyan Pathak of Fareed Haque Group), Digital Underground, Blueground Undergrass, Garaj Mahal, EOTO (members of String Cheese Incident), The Schwag, Ekoostik Hookah, Tea Leaf Green, Split Lip Rayfield, Devon Allman & Honeytribe, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, and Victor Wooten; and performed on stage with acoustic blues dynamo, Corey Harris, and Chicago blues legend Billy Branch as well. Jaik has moved well over 15,000 CDs by hand with no outside assistance, one by one, hand to fan. His song “Leaving Vancouver” was featured on the front page of the Chicago Sun Times website accompanying an article and a 2 page photograph in the paper itself. His song Checks & Balances was featured on Neil Young’s website for over a year. He is featured on the Mo’ Phunk Records compilation “Re-Fuel Your Soul” along with groups like Stroke 9 (top 10 hit “Little Black Backpack”) and Lucky Boys Confusion (Elektra records). A new album is in the works for 2009.

Jaiks 4-octave voice stretches out in vocal solos and scatting over his high-energy acoustic guitar work on original songs that are accessible and lyrically intriguing. The focus is on keeping the show fun for the audience.

Jaik is an educated musician, having trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Illinois and California State Universities’ music departments, and in Hollywood’s Musician’s Institute as their youngest student when he was 16 years-old. He spent all of his teen-age years practicing 10-16 hours per day. After studying jazz and Euro-classical music, Jaik received an ethno-musicology/ anthropology degree with a thesis on microtonal guitar music from Mauritania. He is always seeking performance opportunities and new avenues forward for his music. He has a most unique soaring falsetto and a wild eyes rolled in the back of his head fierce guitar style. He writes original songs, including a fantastic song about Freedom (the gas station). Jaik’s sound is somewhere between Anti-Folk and The Band and it is unlike anything I’ve heard from anyone else. His energy is fierce, his vocal range is inhuman, his beard is long. You’ve gotta check this guy out.

The band made itself a name with sea shanties and Irish melodies in the early 1980s, but its range has widened enormously in the 25-year span the band has been together. They’ve delved into acoustic rock, Latin, jazz, and what they call Great Lakes World Music.

No matter what you decide to call the band’s music, you’ll love the revival quality that runs through all the songs. Their music is uplifting and transcending. It will take you to a different place, and you’re probably going to want to stay there. The band members—Lisa, Rick, Mike and Ingemar—live the good life and sing the praises of the gorgeous Great Lakes. When they say, “25 Years of Joy,” they mean it from the depths of their deep blue hearts.

The band has five recordings to its credit, all with a mix of original and traditional songs.

Whether recreating old songs from the Mississippi Delta or performing songs in her own confessional style, Jo’s music stands original while always reflecting her love of American roots music. Her eclectic writing and performance fuses elements of various modern and traditional folk music, old-time and electric blues, roots rock, garage surf, swing, hot jazz and alt-country. Jo’s band, the Willie Dunns (John Devine, Jef Reynolds and Stuart Tucker) brings added depth and musical styling to Jo’s original songs as well as classics from such artists as Mississippi John Hurt, Bessie Smith and Tom Waits. Jo is also the founding member of the old-time group Uncle Earl.
